Should You Turn Off AC when on Vacation from Woodside, NY? Best Temperature to Set when Away & More

There are lots of things that have changed over the last few months. There are the threat of an illness that has landed more and more people at home. They have kept families at home to try and slow the spread of the virus. This means that all those fun trips and activities that most families do in the summer months might have been postponed. Now that things are starting to get more back to normal, people are trying to take some of those trips. It is a good idea to know what you can do when you are gone to not only protect your home, not waste money but also how to set your air conditioning unit. The AC unit is a part of the home that you want to make sure you use to keep your house comfortable but many people are not sure what to do when they are gone. Do you keep the AC running the whole time you are gone or do you shut down the unit? Agape Air Conditioning, Heating & Plumbing outlines what you need to know about your AC when on vacation.

Close Windows, Curtains & Blinds

One of the things you want to make sure you do is take care of the windows in the house. You are not going to be home and that means you won’t need daylight from the windows. You want to make sure you not only secure the house overall but you also want to keep your air conditioner from overworking. One of the tips it takes to keep your air conditioner from overworking while you are out of town is to make sure you leave interior doors open. You close and lock the front, back and any other exterior doors of the house but you should leave the doors to each room open. In addition to shutting all windows, you also want to close all the curtains and blinds around the house so that there are not any sun or heat coming through the windows. This is a great way to avoid heat transfer in the house that will cause the AC unit from having to work harder.

Unplug Appliances & Devices when Not in Use

If you know that you are going to be gone for a while you want to make sure that you reduce what could be causing heat in the house. The heat can come from things that you keep plugged in while you are home because you are using them on a regular basis. The way that you can reduce the heat is to unplug the appliances and electrical fixtures that you have in your house. These things can create heat that will cause the AC to have to run. This is a great way to reduce not only the heat that is being created but to save on electricity as well.

Program Thermostat

If you have a unit that has a programmable thermostat you want to make sure that you use it to set the temperature. The temperature that you set can be higher than it would if you were to be home. You can then set it so that when you are going to arrive home the unit will kick back down to the temperature that you want it to be more comfortable. It is not best to turn off the unit when you are gone for short amount of time. Typically, you should set your temperature no higher than 84 degrees when you are on summer vacation, and the outdoor temperature is in the high 90’s.
