Stop a toilet from overflowing– Anyone that lives in a house and is capable, should know how to do it. When you see water rising above the bowl from a clogged toilet it can be alarming. You need to work quickly to avoid a huge mess. Take the lid off the tank and raise the bar that has the floating ball on it. This will immediately stop the water from flowing into the tank. If this doesn’t work, you’ll need to turn the water off at the base of the toilet. Doing this will completely stop the flow of water. You may need to use a plunger until the toilet is unclogged.
Cleaning the tub & shower drain– This is an unpleasant task but if you want your plumbing to work right then it needs to be done periodically. If you have lots of hair in your home, then this will need to be done more often. When it takes a long time for water to drain its likely a drain that is clogged. After you take the drain cover off you can use a coat hanger or skinny tongs to get all the hair and soap scum that collects in the drain. Wear gloves and have a plastic bag ready. You may gag but it will be clean; for a while anyway!
A slow kitchen faucet might be the aerator– The aerator on your kitchen faucet is the little mesh piece inside the faucet. It can become clogged with sediment and cause the water pressure to become weak. A new faucet can be pricey, so save your money and clean out the aerator. You can remove it and scrub it with an old toothbrush or use a needle to clean the holes out.
Dropping items down the sink– If you don’t take precaution to keep items safe when cleaning them in the sink they can end up down the drain. The first thing you’ll need to do is turn the water off. Look under the sink and locate the p-trap. Place a pail under the p-trap and open it up. You’ll be happy to find your item fall into the pail. Cleaning the p-trap will also allow for better draining.
