How Do I Know if My Furnace is High Efficiency in Jamaica, NY & When Should I Replace My Heating System?

As we dig deep into the heart of winter, most of us have the heat on to keep us warm day in and day out. This means your furnace is working overtime to ensure you don’t freeze to death this cold winter season. With your heat on, you may be asking yourself if your furnace is really that efficient. No one wants to pay more for heat every month than they need to. Agape Air Conditioning, Heating & Plumbing is here to talk about how you can tell whether or not your furnace is very efficient.

Efficient Furnaces are Better for the Environment

If all of us had furnaces that were efficient, we would live in a greener world. This is one area that you could adjust in your life to live an eco-friendlier life. Right now, there is a law that your furnace has to be at least 80 percent AFUE. If all of us made sure to upgrade to meet this law, Americans would avoid the emission of somewhere between 81-130 million metric tons of carbon pollution over the next 30 years. There are steps that you can take to ensure your furnace is working as efficiently as possible.
– There are online calculators that help you determine how many British Thermal Units (BTU) it takes to keep your house warm. This is determined by inputting the ceiling height, room dimension and desired temperature to come up with your number.
– Every furnace has the efficiency of the furnace labeled on the faceplate. When you know how many BTUs it takes to heat your home, you can look at the output of your furnace to determine if your furnace is getting the job done. If you have a furnace that is only 80 percent efficient and you need to have 100,000 BTUs to heat the house, you need to have a furnace that has an output of 125,000 BTUs at 100%. If the output is too low, you aren’t efficiently heating your home. If the output is too high, then your furnace is likely turning on and off too often to be efficient.

When Should I Replace My Furnace?

While the initial cost of replacing your furnace can seem high, you might be surprised at how much money you can save in heating costs every month by upgrading to a more efficient furnace. These signs mean you may need to replace yours.
– High energy bills
– Frequent repairs
– Furnace is over 15 years old
