Right now, there is a law that your furnace has to be at least 80 percent AFUE. If all of us made sure to upgrade to meet this law, Americans would avoid the emission of somewhere between 81-130 million metric tons of carbon pollution over the next 30 years. There are steps that you can take to ensure your furnace is working as efficiently as possible.
– There are online calculators that help you determine how many British Thermal Units (BTU) it takes to keep your house warm. This is determined by inputting the ceiling height, room dimension and desired temperature to come up with your number.
– Every furnace has the efficiency of the furnace labeled on the faceplate. When you know how many BTUs it takes to heat your home, you can look at the output of your furnace to determine if your furnace is getting the job done. If you have a furnace that is only 80 percent efficient and you need to have 100,000 BTUs to heat the house, you need to have a furnace that has an output of 125,000 BTUs at 100%. If the output is too low, you aren’t efficiently heating your home. If the output is too high, then your furnace is likely turning on and off too often to be efficient.
